The Game

This past Saturday, John & I went to the Big Game, a 90 year Men's basketball rivalry between Calvin College and Hope College in Holland, Michigan. Calvin beat Hope in their arena on January 5, but this time, sadly, we lost. The series is so close - Hope leads 91-87.

I was asked to take photos in the hospitality suite where the presidents of the colleges, major donors and our congressmen were watching the game. I was talking to Rep. Vern Ehlers for awhile about cameras and he asked to have his photo taken with me - what fun! He knew that photographers rarely get their picture taken :)

Love Thursday: Courage

This past Christmas, a friend gave me this Willow Tree figurine which is named "Courage." I was so touched - I didn't have any of them! Well, it's about time I took a photo of it. Courage comes from the Latin word for heart - cor - and the original meaning of courage is to speak your mind by telling all that is in your heart. I think that's a definition worthy of a Love Thursday post!

She's saying "Yes!" :)

Just Near the Snow

I can't say it has been a terribly snowy winter so far, but it has been cold. Hence, most of my snow pix are being taken from behind a window.

Under Construction

As I mentioned yesterday, Deirdre & I went into a warm school on our photo outing. We were rather amazed by these guys floating down from the ceiling.

On the way home, I saw this steeple in the distance and I took a side street to get a photo of it because it really expressed how I have been feeling lately.

Searching for Inspiration and Warmth

Yes, it was an incredibly cold weekend here in the mitten state! Sunday morning was MINUS 15 degrees. My friend Deirdre and I had planned to meet for breakfast Saturday and to venture out to take pictures. Well, we mostly ended up taking photos of our breakfast and then went to a library & school for some indoor shots. Even walking out to the car in these temps might have been energy draining, but when I got home, I realized the warmth of the new images collected not to mention good conversation with a friend had given me the warmth and inspiration I needed.

The Nine Lives of Leo the Cat

untitled shoot-1068.jpg

Our dear Leo was not himself last week. He is rather old for an indoor/outdoor cat and so we thought the end might be near. I took a few photos of him in what I thought might be his last photoshoot and you know what? He started to purr! And it was so amazing because he had not purred in a week! John got him some special cat milk and got him some new food and he perked right up. He's going to be ok...

Love Thursday

I think hydrangeas are my favorite... I even like them all brown in the winter.

Love Thursday

Edward & Maria left for Calvin Tuesday and I was a little sad that I had not taken more photos of them when they were home. I dug up one I had taken though!

I will hopefully find more things to photograph soon.

Healing Hands Photography Exhibit

Yesterday was the last day of the Healing Hands exhibit which I blogged about when I was taking the photos. Here are some pictures of what it looked like when it was up.

"My love of photography began over 30 years ago when my high school geometry teacher encouraged me to take photos for the yearbook. Perhaps she knew already then that my aptitude for math would grow into a passion for finding beauty and symmetry in the chaos of everyday life through photography. I bought my first Canon 35mm camera when I was 16 and have been a “Canon girl” ever since. Through the years, I have carried my Canon to capture some of the shining moments in this blessed, fleeting life because I believe that photographs can help us remember this blessedness in our times of forgetfulness and doubt.

My greater hope is to show glimpses of God’s glory and to affirm His beauty in people and in the world. When presented with the idea for the “Healing Hands” project, I was excited about the opportunity to show the larger picture of how we are all connected and how we are all striving to praise the Great Creator through our work, and that no matter what we do for Him here at Pine Rest, we are part of the mission to provide Jesus’ healing to our patients. I hope in some way to have captured some of that beauty. Thank you to all for lending me your hands!"-Julia Smilde

I took a picture when Maria came to see it:

Cameras with Jelly Props

Last week, my friend Deirdre and I had some time off, so we met for breakfast. It had been too long for one of our escapades! We met at Russ' where we were by far the youngest in the building and where people accepted our behavior as normal maybe because they couldn't hear us, but oh well. Coffee, cameras and brekkie with a friend.. doesn't get much better!

We rang in the new year last evening with our old friends Keith & Lori... a fun night that included hot tubbing and ping pong! Maria painted these wine glasses for the occasion.
