Looking Up One Day

winter -
I never saw a discontented tree. They grip the ground as though they liked it, and though fast rooted they travel about as far as we do.   John Muir

The Guest House

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they're a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.

Birds in the Backyard, Listen

No, we have been as usual asking the wrong question. It does not matter a hoot what the mockingbird on the chimney[deck] is singing. The real and proper question is: Why is it beautiful?

After the big snow Friday, John blew us out of here.  I went for a walk later and found some snow scenes.

homecoming 2013--2

Bridget went to South Christian's Homecoming this past Saturday night.  Before the dance, one of her friend's parents had them over for a steak dinner and I took these photos there beforehand.  What nice kids they all were, said the mother!

Here are the sweet girls...
